Abstract

Epidermoid cysts are benign inclusion cysts originated from ectoderm, that are rarely seen in the head and neck region. They are mostly located in the submental area of the head and neck region. Usually they manifest themselves as a slowly growing painless mass that can reach a giant size. When the epidermoid cysts located in the submental area reach a large size, they can cause serious problems in breathing, swallowing or speaking in many patients. A 23-year-old male patient was admitted to the otorhinolaryngology polyclinic with the complaint of a painless mass under the chin. We learned that the mass existed for about one year, but it grew quickly in the last two to three months. We detected a mass of 7x5x4 cm in the mouth, filling both of the sublingual area under the tongue, pushing the tongue up and backwards, covered with normal mucosa at the otorhinolaryngology examination. The mass was excised intraorally by horizontal incision at midline. It was easily removed from the surrounding tissues with its capsule, there was no adhesion to the hyoid bone or other tissues. Incision was primarily closed by placing drains to reduce the dead space. There was no complication in the postoperative period. In this article, we present a male case, who had an epidermoid cyst located in the submental area that reached quite a large size.
